India’s academic institutes to go green with central aid

Top technology institutes in Bengal like Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), NIT-Durgapur and IIT-Kharagpur, will soon turn into solar hubs with

many already installing solar panels to become energy-efficient campuses. The national solar mission, through the ministry of new and renewable energy (MNRE) has persuaded the ministry of human resource and development to request all academic institutes to set up roof-mounted solar plants.

The HRD ministry is providing 30% subsidy, in some cases even more depending on the campus location, for the project.

The ministry has asked all major Indian Institute of Technologies (IITs) and National Institute of Technologies (NITs) to “go green”. The institute has initiated the process of setting up a 1MW solar plant divided among different rooftops of academic buildings and hostels with 30% government subsidy. Read More…
